Use of this medication
The recommended dose of esomeprazole in the treatment
of GERD is 20 mg to 40 mg taken once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. Esomeprazole
in a dose of 20 mg daily is sometimes taken to prevent a severe
form of GERD (erosive esophagitis) from returning.
When used in the treatment of stomach ulcers caused
by H. pylori, the dose of esomeprazole is 40 mg once daily taken
with amoxicillin 1000 mg twice daily and clarithromycin 500 mg twice
daily, all of which for 10 days.
Body weight, other medical conditions, and other
medications can affect the dosage of this medication. Do not change
the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your
doctor, even if it is different than what is listed here.
Esomeprazole should be taken a minimum of 1 hour
before a meal. The capsule should be swallowed whole and should
not be broken, crushed, or chewed. Or, the capsule may be opened
and the granules sprinkled on applesauce or in yogurt and swallowed
immediately. You can also mix the granules in water, apple or orange
juice if you drink it immediately.
